WiSe 23/24: Anthropology of Religion: An Introduction

This course serves as a critical-intersectional introduction to the Anthropology of Religion. Students will find an orientation to some of the key concepts and categories within the discipline. Together, we will explore the gendered, material and affective approaches to religious experience and practice. Through readings and discussion, we will think about religion across its otherworldly and everyday aspects and simultaneously gain a sense of how it can be approached ethnographically. More importantly, the course is envisioned to reflect and respond to the discipline’s postcolonial moment, discuss its contemporary troubles and to question what is termed as classical or canonical from a critical perspective. The reading plan will reflect a range of cultural and disciplinary takes that make religion a worthwhile object of study while keeping close at hand queer-feminist, decolonial and Global South perspectives.
