Comparing Regional Organizations: Opportunities and Challenges

This seminar sheds light on regional organizations (ROs), which unlike global IOs recruit their member states on the basis of geographic criteria. While the European Union and the African Union are prominent ROs, there are more than 70 ROs in all parts of the world. This course systematically explores similarities and differences between ROs as outlets of cooperation between member states and studies which internal and external challenges ROs are confronted with and how these challenges can be addressed. In doing so, the course places emphasis on working with theoretical approaches, including the development of hypotheses and questions of operationalization (concept specification, indicators and measurement). Accordingly, learning outcomes include: • increasing the substantive knowledge on ROs and the challenges they face in today’s world • strengthening analytical competencies • deepening the theoretical knowledge and learning how to develop hypotheses • working with primary sources to map and compare political systems Introductory literature: • Tanja A. In order to obtain ECTS credits, you need to - do all the core readings, prepare notes and bring them to class - actively participate in all the sessions - work on one group project (including literature and primary source based research, power point presentation (20 minutes), and 2-page handout) - write an individual paper based on your group project (adding two other ROs that have not been covered by any of the groups in the same slot is essential) Schließen
