Course content

In this course, the topic of human rights will be explored from a legal perspective, but with a focus on current political debates about human rights and in particular with a view to the interrelationships of various human rights protection systems. Prior knowledge of the basics of public international law is welcome, but no requirement for participation.

After an introductory session presenting an overview of the topics covered in this course, the main regional systems of human rights protection will be discussed, with a focus on the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR). Two sessions will deal with the interrelationship of different human rights systems, including the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, the ECHR and the international level. Further issues will be dedicated to international human rights regime (International Covenants on Civil & Political Rights & Social & Economic Rights). In the last part of the course we will deal with climate litigation as a human rights issue from a comparative perspective and welcome a guest speaker to talk about her experiences in human rights advocacy.

The class will require reading preparatory materials for each session and will encourage active participation in the form of short presentations. Readings will be announced and distributed through the Blackboard learning website.

Assessment

Evaluation will be based on a presentation, also to be handed in in written form at the end of the semester, and possibly a written final exam (tbc). Schließen
