Today's political research demands the application of rigorous statistical methods. Statistics for Political and Social Research in Africa (SPSRA) aims to give students basic statistical knowledge tailored for survey research, particularly within the African context. SPSRA cover statistical methods and techniques that are relevant to conducting research in the fields of politics and social sciences in Africa.
The course will cover various topics, including descriptive statistics, statistical inference, sampling techniques, and survey research methods. Moreover, it will emphasize the practical application of these statistical techniques to address research inquiries pertinent to the African context. These include the analysis of public opinion, political participation, voting behavior, social inequality, and other socially and politically significant topics using available data such as Afrobarometer data.
Additionally, the course will highlight utilizing statistical software such as Stata for data analysis and visualization. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to analyze and interpret data related to political and social phenomena in Africa effectively. Ultimately, this proficiency will enable them to utilize data-driven insights to inform policy-making and decision-making processes.
