V-Wandel und Variation der germanischen Sprachen

Language changes and varies. At all times and in all places. A closer look will reveal that the dynamics of human language need not be entirely random. Yet, the patterns and causalities underlying language change and variation are complex and instantiate independently on different levels. What does an individual speaker contribute to the new formation of an expression or of a structure? What happens on the social level, when many people interact? In what way do the different levels of language (phonetics, morphology, syntax, meaning) trigger dynamics or influence each other? And which role does the linguistic diversity of human societies play in triggering change?
The core research question – Why and how does language vary and change? – refers to human language in general. Therefore, while focussing on Germanic languages and their historical development, observations from non-Germanic languages will be included whenever helpful. We will also accommodate our historical-linguistic knowledge with observations about every-day behavior of speakers in the present, because hypotheses about earlier stages of language derived from historical sources must be compatible with the cognitive, interactive and social processes of individuals in the present-day world.
