Soviet Politics and Its Legacies

The Soviet Union is long gone, yet research on Soviet politics is in no way irrelevant or obsolete. Understanding how the Soviet state functioned and which mechanisms ensured its stability (but also its final fragmentation) is important for understanding the functioning of modern autocracies. Furthermore, Soviet Union seems to cast a long shadow on the contemporary political and social development in Eurasia: Putin's war against Ukraine could be the last manifestation of it. The seminar pursues the goal of reviewing the literature on the Soviet Union, its political system and its development. We will explicitly cover both Sovietology literature from the era of the USSR and contemporary retrospective studies. We will also carefully examine the work on historical legacies of the Soviet Union.
For active participation, students have to submit three questions to each session on the reading material provided by the instructor. Furthermore, they have to write a short essay (two pages) on a selected aspect of Soviet politics. Schließen
