National Scientific Communities between Isolation and Integration

We are used to thinking about science as a global and universal phenomenon, connecting individual countries. Yet in practice the situation is often much more complicated; scientific research in individual countries develops in isolation from each other, creating 'national' traditions of scholarly thought. This is particularly important for social sciences and humanities, where science is inherently connected to the political debate. The seminar will look at the case of the post-Communist Eastern Europe (but also a number of comparable cases), looking at how national traditions in economics, sociology and political science emerged an which role did they play in the development of individual countries - either strengthening protectionism and anti-Westernism or encouraging integration into the global world.
