Cross-Strait Relations

Cross-Strait Relations refer to the relationship between the People's Republic of China (PRC), commonly known as "China", and the Republic of China (ROC), commonly known as "Taiwan". The relationship between these two political entities is complex and has deteriorated in recent years after a period of stabilization. During Ma Ying-jeou's first term in office (2008-2012), the Economic Framework Agreement (ECFA) was signed with the aim of reducing tariffs and trade restrictions between the two sides. In addition to economic rapprochement, relations were also considerably expanded in culture and education. However, following the Sunflower Movement of 2014 and the electoral success of the China-critical Democratic Progressive Party under Tsai Ing-wen, relations have deteriorated rapidly.
While an active exchange of goods and people is welcomed by part of Taiwanese population and politicians, an equally large proportion is critical towards further rapprochement. Supporters see the close relationship with mainland China as an economic necessity, while critics see the increasingly powerful neighbor as a threat to Taiwan's democracy and political self-determination.
By means of political science theories (especially international relations) the course will trace cross-strait relations since the end of the 20th century. A special focus will be placed on the actors and institutions that determine relations between China and Taiwan. By means of concrete examples of conflict and cooperation, students will be able to analyze and assess current developments in cross-strait relations. In the seminar we will research, read and discuss not only English literature, but also Chinese primary sources.
