This seminar delves into the complex role of chemicals in the co-production of life-death worlds, drawing attention to their ambivalent qualities. As substances that can both foster life and induce death, chemicals play a pivotal role in shaping our ways of being in the world and of dying in it. Through a critical examination of 'toxic living' and the politics surrounding chemical exposure, this seminar aims to explore the myriad ways in which chemicals influence health, environment, and social inequalities. Participants will engage with current anthropological perspectives on the ethics, politics, and affects associated with living and dying amidst chemicals. We will consider chemicals' impact on human and more-than-human bodies, examining both their detrimental and beneficial effects on health and well-being.
