Political Activism on Social Media

Social media with its constantly changing and emerging platforms has had and continues to have a strong impact on political communication. In this seminar, we will focus on the use of social media by civil society actors, a field which is made up of a broad variety of organizations, movements, groups, and individuals. Social media and related digital innovations like AI offer these actors a wide range of opportunities to organize their work, contribute to social and political discourse and influence political decisions. The seminar will analyze the opportunities and challenges of current social media for civil society actors with the help of selected case studies.
In the first part of the course, the relevant characteristics of social media and of political activism will be discussed in order to develop analytical categories for the analysis of particular cases of activism. After an introduction into case study methods, students will select relevant cases of current social media activism and carry out and present their analyses in the second part of the course.
