A neutral and objective exercise? Methods in archaeology and their political implications.

Henny Piezonka, Tanja Schreiber

Kommentar

In archaeology, various methods and practices are used to analyze data and draw conclusions, with political implications related to representation, power dynamics, and interpreting the past. In this class, we will examine global archaeological case studies to showcase diverse research methodologies that address issues like inequality, social organization, and cultural dynamics. We will explore their potential to challenge or reinforce prevailing narratives about past societies and how they influence interpretations of power relations, social organization, and cultural change. The second part of the class will delve into archaeological practices and their societal and political implications, with a focus on participatory archaeology. This approach emphasizes the active involvement of diverse perspectives in archaeological research, interpretation, and decision-making. Thus, the course aims to encourage critical examination of the political dimensions in methodologies, practices, and interpretations, fostering a nuanced understanding of the past within broader socio-political contexts.
