The Invention of Terror(ism): State Violence, Resistance, and Revolutions in Imperial France in the Long 19th Century

In textbooks on the history of modern terrorism, the invention of terrorism is often dated to the second half of the 19th century, with the French Revolution of 1789 playing a minor role. Challenging this established chronology, a growing body of literature demonstrates that the 1790s were not only the historical moment when the term "terrorisme" was first uttered but also a period marked by various forms of extreme violence that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. There is thus reason to argue that modern terrorism was born from the great revolution and that it spread in subsequent waves of political upheavel throughout 19th-century Europe. However, questions remain: What exactly is "modern terrorism"? When did it come into existence? What were the conditions of its emergence? And how did this practice traverse space and time, reaching even the peripheries of the French Empire? Schließen
