This course focuses on close reading and critical examination of archival material written in Ottoman Turkish from the mid nineteenth century onwards. It introduces a wide variety of documents to acquaint the students with different forms of writing, official and non official authorships, and voices from distinct socio economic and ethno religious backgrounds. These forms include but are not limited to, individual and collective petitions, personal letters, local and imperial council decisions, diplomatic correspondence, public announcements, and investigation reports While reading, transcribing, and interpreting texts, a particular palaeographic emphasis will be paid to the para textual elements such as style , cataloguing, addressee, date, seals and marginalia to have a more comprehensive picture of the content. In doing so, the participants will be encouraged to analyse the (re)productions and ( mis/ re)presentations of Ottoman documents within the historical context and to trace their journey across borders, languages and offices. Ultimately, the course aims to contribute to greater fluency and command of Ottoman archiving and administrative thinking and reinforce students’ ability to conduct independent archi val research on and beyond the former territories of the Ottoman Empire.
