The job search can feel challenging and overwhelming. Where am I going? What do I want to do? For students entering the job market or looking for an internship, it can also be difficult to translate your experiences into concrete competencies that fit the job posting. What am I good at? How do I stand out? The internet can sometimes feel like a sea of conflicting advice, ideas, and new technologies, and it can be hard to know how to approach applying for jobs in the contemporary world in a way that aligns with your values, showcases your talents, and resonates with potential employers.

In this workshop, we’ll take a look at what really matters when applying to jobs. We’ll explore the most effective ways to approach the job search and the application process, and we’ll learn how to use digital tools and generative AI (ChatGPT) to support us in the process.  We’ll learn how to explore career paths, identify your skills, and create great application documents. We’ll also discuss what to watch out for and what to avoid when using generative AI in the application process. Upon completing this workshop, you’ll have a set of hands-on tools that you can use – with and without AI – that will help you to navigate the job or internship search effectively and to find a path that truly fits you.

  • Why is it important to know where I’m going? How do I find a career path that fits me?
  • What digital tools exist to help me explore career paths? How can AI help me to learn more about potential career paths?
  • How can I identify my skills, knowledge, strengths, and experiences? How can I use digital tools to help me feel more confident about what I have to offer?
  • What are employers looking for? How can I use AI to help me identify skills and traits that employers might be interested in? What other digital tools exist to help me understand the job market?
  • How can I frame my experiences, knowledge, skills, and traits so that they resonate with potential employers? How can I use AI to help me better connect my experiences to employer expectations?
  • How do I write a CV and cover letter that tell my story in an effective way that is engaging to employers? What tools exist to help me improve and refine my CV and cover letter using AI?
  • What writing tools exist to help support me in writing a CV and cover letter in another language, for example, English or German, if it’s not my native language - without relying on error-prone translation tools?
  • How can I be aware of potential issues with using AI, and what should I avoid in using digital tools in the job application process?
