HS-Studying the Present Moment: Dis/Affection, Kinship, and Fragile Forms: Writing the Publishing Industry

The 2020s have seen the publication of a string of highly popular novels that include critical perspectives on writing and the publishing industry. In this seminar, we will engage more closely with Yellowface by R.F. Kuang (2023), The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris (2021), Percival Everett's Erasure (2001; republ. 2021), and, for a more historical perspective, Zadie Smith's The Fraud (2021).
We will also engage with some of these book's adaptations, such as of TOBG and Erasure ("American Fiction," 2023), their discussions online and offline, and how they themselves utilise intermediality as a textual strategy.
In looking at how they and their authors negotiate interlocking aspects of affect, kinship, and form, both within their plots and in relation to the publishing structures from which they arise, we seek to generate understanding of how this new genre sits with the current historical moment and its various influences and challenges, in the publishing industry and beyond.
