      What is a Black feminist intervention and how does it shape space in the classroom, on the page, or on stage? How can we listen for forms of freedom in the institutional and personal archives of Black women? Which differences and convergences exist between African-American and Afro-German diasporas?

      In this research group, we will discuss Black feminist theory and practices, engage with archival artifacts, and explore creative ways to do and write about research. After choosing a focus area (sound, performance/movement, image, or writing), students will conduct their own collaborative research in the archives of Audre Lorde and May Ayim, both located at Free University, and interact with an archival exhibition by a contemporary Berlin-based performing artist. The semester concludes with a public presentation of our multimedia research outputs.

      The offering is especially suited for students in Theater/Dance/Film/Music/Sound Studies, Gender Studies, Area Studies, and (Art) History. Students should be willing and able to read texts in English. Students can conduct and present their own final research project in English or German. German language is also welcome for class discussions (if it works for everyone).

      To keep up with the demands of real-world truck logistics, package delivery, and ride-pooling, academic models and algorithms have to: (1) account for economic, safety, and environmental vehicle features; (2) include preferences of drivers, dispatchers, and customers; and (3) obey EU policy constraints. The research question is 'How can we integrate these into the design of emerging technologies?'.

      The X-Student Research Group will first develop new models by collecting data from companies and surveys. Then, they will use ideas from the literature to analyze and develop algorithms for these models. Finally, to increase transparency, students will develop methods that explain their solutions. The deliverables will support companies.

      Prerequisites are skills in mathematics, programming (e.g. Python, Java, C++), statistics (e.g. mean, standard deviation), or ethics. Activities include developing ideas, individual supervision, team tasks, invited talks, and conference participation.

      The year 2024 commemorates 100 years of surrealism, and its exhibitions emerge as a potential object of study to question the role of art in society. The main research question is: What do surrealist exhibitions, in both content and practice, teach us about contemporary issues and the transgressive power of art? To answer it, students will select a specific exhibition or topic to develop archive research. The seminar will support their research activity with roundtables, counseling sessions, conferences by experts, visits to museums, and a small exercise of creative curating. At the end, students should prepare a short essay.

      Previous knowledge of the subject is not required, only basic research skills and creativity. The seminar aims to help students acquire and improve their skills for managing sources and analyzing material related to art history or visual arts. Students will also acquire knowledge of the art history of the 20th century and museums and curatorial theory.

      The goal of the project is to make the process of creating a 3D model of individual anatomical brain scans accessible for anyone. Such models could be used in teaching as well as medical education. The students will acquire structural MR images by participation in ongoing neuroimaging studies at the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience Berlin (CCNB). These images will be processed using state of the art analysis pipelines of neuroscience research (e.g., FSL, SPM, fMRIprep) and transformed into a printable 3D-model. All analyses scripts for optimized processing will be made available according to the best practices of Open Science.

      The completion of the course will give the participants the chance hold a 3D printed model of their own brain in their hands. This course aims at Master students with a background in neuroscience and a basic understanding of neuroimaging data and their processing.

      Prior experience with (1) Git and/or Docker, (2) Programming (e.g., Matlab, Python) or (3) 3D-printer (e.g., Meshlab software, hardware) are helpful.

      Please make sure to participate in the first meeting, which is an on-site meeting on 18.04.2024 at 2:00pm in Room JK25/021f at Freie Universität Berlin, Silberlaube. During this meeting we will find out how many students are interested in participating - seats will be assigned after the first meeting (in case of too many interested persons the lot decides).

      Ausgehend von aktuellen Debatten über den europaweiten Aufstieg des Rechtsradikalismus erforscht diese Lehrveranstaltung (X-Student Research Group) faschistische, neofaschistische bzw. rechtsradikale Europabegriffe aus einer ideengeschichtlichen Perspektive. Anhand von Grundbegriffen, Schlüsselnarrativen und Argumentationsmustern vergleichen wir rechtsradikale Europavorstellungen in unterschiedlichen Räumen und Zeiten. Wie haben sich Vorstellungen von Europa in der radikalen Rechten in den letzten hundert Jahren verändert?

      Die Teilnehmer*innen diskutieren diese und weitere Fragen in einer einführenden Veranstaltung (19.04.), in selbstständigen Kleingruppen und in zwei Blockseminaren (25./26.05. sowie 06./07.07.). Besonders interessant ist das Projekt für Bachelor- und Masterstudierende der Geschichts-, Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften. Wegen der gesellschaftlichen Relevanz wollen wir aber auch Studierende anderer Disziplinen einbeziehen. Wir erwarten die Bereitschaft längere Forschungstexte und historischen Primärquellen auf Deutsch und Englisch zu lesen und sich kritisch mit rassistischen, sexistischen und antisemitischen Inhalten zu befassen.

      What significance do monuments hold, along with their underlying ideologies, stories, and the knowledge they convey, within our society? A critical examination of the existing narratives in public space raises the question of how we want to think about representation and portrayals of history — its personalities, events, and experiences — in the future. How do we want to remember, and more importantly, what?

      Starting from here, we aim to explore artistic methods and strategies that question the structure of the monument per se and ask how art in public space can encounter history and collective memory. Through artistic impulses and exemplary artworks, as well as excursions in Berlin, discussions, and exchanges with artists and organizations, we want to develop proposals that embrace innovative conceptual and design ideas to remember and represent (historical) events.

      The project is open to students from all disciplines. A basic knowledge of public art is preferable. Active participation is required.

      Das Forschungsseminar “Zwischen Objekt und Diskurs: Reflexive Forschung zur Restitutionsdebatte“ lädt Studierende dazu ein, eine eigenständige Forschung zur aktuellen Restitutionsdebatte durchzuführen. Im Zentrum stehen das Kennenlernen und Anwenden anthropologischer und kunstwissenschaftlicher Methoden und der kritische und selbstreflexive Forschungsprozess.

      Ausgangspunkt und Forschungsort ist das Humboldtforum in Berlin, Ethnologisches Museum. Durch einen angeleiteten Forschungsverlauf und mehrere Besuche im Humboldtforum soll das Forschungsprojekt den Studierenden zu einer eigenständigen Positionalität in der Debatte verhelfen. Dafür setzen sich diese praxisorientiert mit Objekten und dem Ausstellungsort auseinandersetzen, verfassen verschiedene Textformate, recherchieren Literatur, führen Expert:innengespräche mit unterschiedlichen Akteur:innen und veröffentlichen am Ende die Ergebnisse in einem Podcast.

      This X-Student Research Group will conduct a case study of a protest camp using Telegram data and is directly linked to the ERC-Project LOOPS (The Logistics of Popular Uprisings in Competitive Authoritarian Regimes). The project is directed towards master’s students who have an interest in Computational Social Science Methods. This includes students from Political Science, Sociology, or any related fields as well as students from Computer Science who share an interest in the Social Sciences.

      Students will discuss protest camp research in authoritarian regimes with a focus on online communication. We will discuss new concepts and approaches to the organization of protest camps. The course teaches students (i) state-of-the-art literature on protest camps; (ii) how to collect data using web-based methods; (iii) how to analyze huge datasets through computational methods; (iv) basic coding skills in R and/or Python; and (v) how to present research output to a wider audience.

      Trans* Personen machen viele belastende Erfahrungen und sind daher oft psychisch stärker belastet als ihre cisgeschlechtlichen Peers. Doch es gibt auch bestärkende und freudvolle Erfahrungen (resilienzfördernde Faktoren), die teilweise trans*spezifisch sind. In dem vorliegenden Forschungsprojekt sollen beide Arten von Erfahrungen von trans* Jugendlichen anhand eines bereits vorhandenen Datensatzes qualitativ analysiert werden.

      Basierend auf dem Gender Minoritäten-Stress-Modell (Testa et al., 2015) sollen exemplarisch sogenannte distale Minoritäten-Stressoren (z.B. Diskriminierung, Zurückweisung) untersucht werden. Daneben soll als freudvolle Erfahrung Geschlechtseuphorie — eine Kategorie, die bereits aus den Daten abgeleitet und kürzlich immer häufiger in der Literatur als resilienzfördernder Faktor postuliert wurde — näher betrachtet werden. Die englischsprachigen Daten stammen aus einem Online-Forum und sind daher unbeeinflusst von Interaktion oder Interventionen der Forschenden.

      Am 25.4. um 18 Uhr wird es ein kurzes Vorab Online-Meeting geben, um die Anmeldung zu klären, einen Überblick über den Umfang zu geben und Fragen zu klären.       What are the visions of the future of contemporary social movements and how do they challenge neoliberal politics? This Research Group will present an intersectional and critical approach to both investigate the discourses and political practices of activists and rediscuss utopias and processes of social change.

      In this seminar, we will present contemporary theories and methodologies for studying social movements and the students are going to research a German social movement of their choice. Students will receive supervision in conducting interviews, doing document analysis, elaborating presentations and writing a short sociological essay.

      The Research Group is open to Master students from Sociology, Political Science, Anthropology, Gender Studies and other related sciences, interested in developing their skills in qualitative methodology and furthering their knowledge of political sociology and contemporary critique of neoliberalism in social theory.

      What is the Right Ontology for the Anthropocene? (Elena Tripaldi)

      Since the definition of our geological era as 'Anthropocene' has been popularised, environmentalists, posthumanist and feminist materialist thinkers have highlighted how the character of human activity on the environment is shaped and supported by a specific ontological worldview, in which every being that is not human is considered as an object, in the sense of inanimate, incapable of individual determination, and at humans’ disposal like a tool. This understanding presupposes an even deeper ontological belief, representing substance, or matter as something formless and lifeless, to which only human activity can shape. Thus, to change the way humans act on their environment, it is necessary to produce a novel ontological understanding of matter and of objects. Yet, the contemporary debate in ecocriticism shows very little agreement on how such novel ontological understanding should look like.

      In this research group, we will consider and compare the most popular 'ontologies of the Anthropocene' (Arne Naess' Deep Ecology, Timothy Morton's Dark Ecology, Rosi Braidotti's and Jane Bennetts' feminist materialism). By comparing and contrasting these positions and their ontological implications, we will develop a set of desiderata for the right ontology for the Anthropocene. We will divide into three groups, each focusing on one of the main approaches. Research results will be presented in a five-episode podcast we will write and record together.

      Ursprünglich bedeutete Mythos dasselbe wie Logos („Wort“), aber die beiden Begriffe haben sich im Laufe der Zeit auseinanderentwickelt und der Mythos wurde für lange Zeit unterdrückt. Der Mythos hat jedoch in diesem Prozess, der vom Logos geführt wird, überlebt und bereits im Barock begannen sich Gegentendenzen abzuzeichnen, die den Mythen eine historische bzw. existentielle Bedeutung zusprechen und dadurch einen neuen, vertieften Begriff von Rationalität zu gewinnen versuchen. Mythische Erfahrungsformen prägen also weiterhin das gegenwärtige Denken, indem sie eine andere Art der Vernunft als 'reinen Logos' darstellen und eine lebendige Interpretation der Wirklichkeit ermöglichen.

      In diesem Seminar werden die Texte der Mythentheorie, die über die gesamte Breite des Geisteslebens verstreut sind, in Form von gemeinsamer Lektüre behandelt. Dabei wird kritisch und historisch mit den Ent- und Remythisierungsbemühungen der europäischen Denker aus verschiedenen Epochen auseinandergesetzt. Das Ziel des Kurses besteht also nicht nur in der Vermittlung von themenbezogenem Wissen, sondern auch in der Förderung der Fähigkeit, abstrakte Texte ohne simplifizierende Schaubilder zu lesen und zu hinterfragen.

      In dem literaturwissenschaftlich-soziologischen Seminar fragen wir: Wie werden in feministischen Texten und Bewegungen Liebessemantiken formuliert und wie wird um sie gestritten? Diskurse um Liebe spüren wir auf, indem wir debattenprägende Romane, Polemiken und andere ästhetische und aktivistische Positionen untersuchen. Wie verhalten sich feministische Akteur*innen zu dem Leitbild der romantischen Liebe? Welche alternativen Formen von Liebe, Care und Begehren werden entwickelt? Ziel ist es, Liebe als umstrittenes Gefühl in Feminismen der Gegenwart besser zu verstehen.

      Studierende aus gesellschaftswissenschaftlichen und geisteswissenschaftlichen Fächern gehen diesen Fragen mit uns gemeinsam forschend in fünf Seminarblöcken nach. Auf diese Weise sammeln sie Erfahrung im interdisziplinären Arbeiten, das soziologische und literaturwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen und Methoden zusammenbringt.

      Im Rahmen der X-Student Research Group wollen wir die allgemeine Frage beantworten, ob es möglich ist, ein angepasstes in vitro Verdauungs-Protokoll für die Bestimmung der Proteinverdauung zu entwickeln, damit wir den Nährwert von pflanzlichen Produkten und Nebenprodukten für die Tierernährung abschätzen können.

      Die Studenten werden an dem in vitro Verdauungsprotokoll arbeiten und zu dessen Verbesserung beitragen. Sie werden die Proteinverdauung in den verschiedenen Phasen (oral, gastrisch, intestinal) verfolgen, um die Verdauungskinetik in den verschiedenen Verdauungsphasen zu beurteilen. Am Ende werden sie feststellen, welche Produkte für eine nachhaltige Tierernährung geeignet sind.

      Für die Teilnahme an dem Forschungsprojekt sollten die Studierenden Interesse an Nachhaltigkeit, Tierernährung, Biochemie und Physiologie haben.
