Counseling concerning BAföG (Federal Education Assistance Act)
10117 Berlin
A booklet containing detailed information about support under the German Federal Education Assistance Act (BAföG) is available in the main BAföG Office (Behrenstr. 40/41) and at the InfoPoints in the lobbies of the student dining halls (TU: Mensa Hardenbergstraße, and FU: Mensa Otto-von-Simson-Straße). Detailed information is also available online.
Students who have previously studied at other colleges or universities should register with the Studierendenwerk - Div. Ausbildungsförderung, so that their files can be requested from their previous place of study.
Caution: Be aware that changing your major can lead to the loss of your BAföG support! Before making any changes in your major, it is important to consult the BAföG Office or the BAföG Advice Center of AstA.
Every student receiving BAföG assistance must submit to a performance review at the end of the fourth semester. When submitting the application for continued BAföG support for the fifth semester, a qualification certificate must be included with the other paperwork.
For the qualification certificate an appointed professor from the department of the student's major field is required to sign a statement as to whether the student has or has not attained the required achievement status by the end of the 4th semester.
Students can obtain the name of the responsible professor in their department by consulting the Departmental Advisors' Office.
Students who have not completed the required achievements, can submit a written request to the BAföG Office for a postponement of the deadline for submission of the qualification certificate. Permission to postpone the deadline will only be granted for serious reasons (e.g., pregnancy, illness, disability, work in the student council).
In addition, there is the possibility – under certain circumstances – to obtain loans from the Studierendenwerk or from the Loan Society for Students, Hardenbergstr. 35, 10623 Berlin.
