Support for specific disciplinary groups
Foundations support scholarly work and research through a broad spectrum of tools, such as project grants, printing and travel expenses, academic awards, scholarships, grants, fellowships, and visiting professorships. This makes them an integral part of activities to support and promote research. The kinds of support offered by foundations may vary, and they often cover areas that are missing from the wider external funding sector, such as the support provided by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the EU, or the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Grants and support from foundations are based in large measure on the implementation of project ideas that are proposed to the foundations on participants’ own initiative. The websites listed below set out groups of disciplines whose project requests can be supported by foundations. Selected foundations are also listed.
