Program description

With the scholarships for German scientists, the Fulbright Commission supports the establishment and deepening of contacts between German and American universities and research institutions, the establishment of German and American guest lectureships and joint research projects at the respective participating universities.
Scholarship benefits

  • Funding for transatlantic round-trip travel in the amount of 1,400 euros
  • Monthly maintenance allowance of 2,000 euros 
  • One-time flat-rate allowance for incidental expenses in the amount of 300 euros
  • Health and accident insurance
  • Visa Sponsorship (scholarship holders travel to the USA with the free Fulbright J-1 visa)
  • Support and admission to the Fulbright network

Target group

Applications are open to postdoctoral scholars (professors, lecturers, and junior research assistants) who are planning a three- to nine-month teaching and/or research stay at an academic institution in the United States. In particular, we are looking for scholars who, through their personality and commitment, actively contribute to the academic and cultural exchange between Germany and the United States.

Application requirements

Applicants should belong to a German university or research institution and must fulfill the following requirements:

  • German citizenship
  • Invitation for a research or teaching assignment at a recognized American university or scientific institute of at least three months' duration
  • Willingness to work for German-American understanding (especially to deepen transatlantic scientific relations)
  • Convincing professional and personal profile

Program participation is subject to current national and regional Covid-19 policies, the operational status of U.S. host universities, availability of consular services (visa issuance), transatlantic travel opportunities, and full compliance with official visa and entry requirements (including current immunization requirements).
Application procedure and deadlines

Applications are submitted via online portal and email. For stays with start dates on or after July 1, 2023, please use the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program 2023-24.

Please take these instructions into account and upload only the following documents:

  • Completed questionnaire for applicants
  • Curriculum vitae (in English)
  • Essay Project Statement (2-3 pages, in English)
  • Research Bibliography (if research is planned, 1-3 pages of relevant references)
  • Course Syllabi (if teaching is planned, up to 10 pages for announced and past courses)
  • Invitation from the U.S. host university with the following information: Name of your coordinator/supervisor, time frame with exact start and end dates, information on the content of your work at the host institution, information on in-kind or financial resources provided to you by the host institution
  • Letter from the home institution indicating support for the project (e.g., confirmation of the possibility of a leave of absence).

    In addition, please provide the contact information of two individuals who will also upload their confidential academic reviews by the deadline applicable to you (at least 9 months prior to the start of your stay).

Please do not upload any documents other than those mentioned. An English language certificate is not required. Only complete applications submitted by the deadline that meet all formal criteria will be included in the selection process.

You can submit your application throughout the year, but at least nine months before your planned departure to the USA. Please submit the complete application in the application portal and send us a copy by e-mail to germanscholars[at]fulbright.de at the same time.
