According to this year’s QS World University Ranking, Freie Universität remains one of the six best universities in Germany. As Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Ltd. announced on Thursday in London, Freie Universität ranks 130 worldwide, a similarly strong position as in the previous year (2017/2018: 125). The university’s good academic reputation and an increase in the number of citations by the university’s scholars and scientists were important factors.

Among the top-ranked German universities, Technische Universität München (TU Munich) placed 61st worldwide, followed by Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich, 62), the University of Heidelberg (64), the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT, rank 116), and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (121). Among German universities, the ranks 7 through 10 are held by RWTH Aachen, Technische Universität Berlin (147), Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (168), and Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg (186).

Globally, the three top-ranked universities are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, and Harvard University. The best European university is Oxford University at rank 5 worldwide.

Six indicators were evaluated: the academic reputation of the institution, the number of citations by researchers, the ratio between students and faculty, the reputation of graduates among employers, and the international composition of faculty and students.
