"Confucius Institute of the Year 2007" at Freie Universität Berlin

The Confucius Institute at Freie Universität Berlin was recently selected as "Confucius Institute of the Year 2007" by the newly founded central coordinating office of the Confucius Institutes in Beijing. The institute at Freie Universität Berlin was selected for its excellent program of Chinese language classes, events, academic lectures, and exhibits. Opened in April, 2006, it was the first institute of its kind in Germany.

Only 20 of the 145 Confucius Institutes around the world were recognized with this award. The award ceremony was part of the official opening of the new "Confucius Institute Headquarter" in Bejing.

The Confucius Institute at Freie Universität Berlin is a nonprofit public institution for the promotion of Chinese language and culture abroad. Started by the Chinese National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language in Beijing, the institute in Berlin was founded in cooperation with Freie Universität Berlin and Peking University. The objectives of the Confucius Institute include spreading knowledge of Chinese languages and culture, facilitating Chinese-German cooperation, supporting sinology and Chinese Studies at Freie Universität Berlin, and sponsoring China-related projects.
