Ranking by U.S. News & World Report: Freie Universität Berlin among 80 Best Universities Worldwide

Fifth among German Universities

Freie Universität is among the 100 best universities in the world, according to a ranking by U.S. News & World Report. The university reached rank 80 in a comparison among institutions of higher education in the United States and roughly 60 other countries. In a nationwide comparison, Freie Universität was ranked at 5th place and European-wide at 23. In seven of the 23 subjects under consideration, Freie Universität is one of the 100 best universities worldwide. In the ranking published a few days ago by the prestigious journal, Times Higher Education (THE), Freie Universität also performed very well. It reached rank 72 in an international comparison.

In the university ranking by U.S. News & World Report, Harvard University is at first place among all the universities in the world. Ranks 2 through 4 are held by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of California, and Stanford University. The best European university is the University of Oxford at rank 5. According to this ranking, the best German university is the University of Heidelberg at rank 37. The others are Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich at 53), Technische Universität München (TU Munich at 64), and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (68).

The ranking was carried out in cooperation with the Thomson Reuters media group. It was based mainly on evaluations of publications as well as a worldwide survey of scholars and scientists regarding the global and regional reputations of the universities. Altogether 750 universities were evaluated.
