Sustainable Development and Social Inequalities in the Andes

German Academic Exchange Service Approves Grant of 2.5 Million Euros for New Research and Cooperation Project between Institute for Latin American Studies at Freie Universität and Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú

№ 388/2016 from Nov 10, 2016

A new postgraduate program at Freie Universität Berlin and Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú will address the link between social inequalities and the possibilities for sustainable development in the Andean region. Entitled trAndeSPostgraduate Program on Sustainable Development and Social Inequalities in the Andean Region, the project was set up by scholars at the Institute for Latin American Studies at Freie Universität and the social sciences department at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is supporting the program for a period of five years with around 2.5 million euros.

The new program, trAndeS is a structured postgraduate program based at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) in Lima. The aim is to explore the link between social inequalities and the possibilities for sustainable development in the Andean region. It is expected that the research results will contribute to sustainable development in the region. Through a transnational sustainability network, trAndeS brings together experts from the region to create a greater exchange of experiences between different actors, universities, and non-university institutions and to strengthen and enrich the debate on sustainable societies. According toProf. Dr. Marianne Braig und Dr. Bettina Schorr from the Institute for Latin American Studies and who jointly head the program at Freie Universität, trAndeS combines sustainability research with the successful internationalization strategy at Freie Universität Berlin and includes an excellent, internationally acclaimed university in Lima, which in turn has an effect on the entire Andean region.

TrAndeS is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation (BMZ) in the "Bilateral SDG Graduate Colleges" program of the DAAD.
