Local Politics of Mining in Africa

Fourth Event of Joint Speaker Series at Freie Universität Berlin and Indiana University on April 27, 2017, at Freie Universität Berlin

On April 27, 2017, political scientists from Freie Universität Berlin and Indiana University in the U.S. will discuss the local politics of mining in Africa. The discussion will take place as part of a joint speaker series being organized by Freie Universität and Indiana University during the 2016/2017 academic year. Five events are being held in Indiana and in Berlin, where scholars from both universities will address issues of international politics in English. The events are public, and admission is free. The political scientist Dr. Bettina Engels, a professor at the Department of Political and Social Sciences, Freie Universität Berlin, and Jessica Steinberg, PhD, a professor at Indiana University Bloomington, will discuss mining policy in Africa and will address the issue of how governments, businesses, and the local population deal with the often negative impacts of the extraction of natural resources.

The Joint Speaker Series of Indiana University and Freie Universität Berlin was designed to promote joint research and scholarly exchange as well as to initiate public debates. This is the fourth event of the series. A fifth one will take place in Berlin-Kreuzberg on July 4, 2017.
