THE World Reputation Ranking in 2017: Freie Universität Berlin among Top 70 Universities in the World

Freie Universität One of Five Most Prestigious Universities in Germany

In the latest ranking by the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine, Freie Universität is one of the 70 most highly regarded universities in the world. As announced by THE in London, Freie Universität's reputation places the university in group 61–70 (last year: group 71-80). Along with Technische Universität München (TU Munich), which was ranked in the same group, Freie Universität is one of the five universities in Germany with the best international reputation. The THE World Reputation Ranking is an offshoot of the annually published THE World University Rankings and according to the journal, is based on the world's largest survey of selected academics.

The six German universities among the top 100 in the THE Reputation Ranking are, in addition to Freie Universität and TU Munich, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich) at rank 42 (last year: 40), the University of Heidelberg (group 51–60, as last year), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (group 51-60, as last year) and RWTH Aachen (group 91–100; last year, 81–90).

The first three positions in the THE Reputation Ranking are held by Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Stanford University, all in the United States. In fourth and fifth place, the most prestigious European universities are the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford (both in the UK).
