Is mathematics only about proof? Do mathematicians only intend completely to formalize their sentences? "While looking for its foundations, philosophers and mathematicians have often conceived mathematics as a hierarchic and uniform edifice of ideas," says Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Sybille Krämer from the Institute of Philosophy at Freie Universität, who organized the conference. A praxeological view reverses this image. There is no mathematics without the use of visible signs, be they geometrical figures or sequences of symbols. Mathematics is, moreover, not just a form of knowledge, but part of the understanding of our world. The conference participants will focus on practices that are based on intuition and visualization.

The opening address will be given by Pirmin Stekeler-Weithofer, a professor of theoretical philosophy at the University of Leipzig. The topic is "Geometrical Diagrams and Ideal Forms. Logical Syntax in the Constitution of Pure Intuition."

The conference "Visual Reasoning and Intuition in Mathematics. From Kant’s Euclidicity to Digitalization" is being held within the project funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemenischaft (DFG) "Warum und mit welcher Berechtigung ist Kant 'Eukilianer'?" at Freie Universität.
