Event Featuring Work of Portuguese Poet Luís de Camões on June 28 in Literaturhaus Berlin

An event will be held on June 28 in the Literaturhaus Berlin featuring the work of the Portuguese poet Luís de Camões (1524–1580). The occasion is to celebrate the conclusion of a long-term project to publish a bilingual Portuguese-German complete edition of his oeuvre. Following a welcome by the Ambassador of Portugal, His Excellency João Mira Gomes, the editors and co-translators of the complete edition, Prof. Dr. Rafael Arnold (Universität Rostock) and Prof. Dr. Susanne Zepp of Freie Universität will give introductions to Camões's work. Students and junior researchers will read texts in Portuguese and German. The event is open to the public, and admission is free.

The complete edition includes The Lusiads, an epic poem by Camões that is often regarded as the most important work of Portuguese literature, and in two additional volumes, all the other poems, dramas, and letters by Camões. The work of Luís de Camões has been fascinating people for centuries. His admirers include Friedrich and August Wilhelm Schlegel, Alexander von Humboldt, Voltaire, Johann Gottfried Herder, and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Over the years, his work has repeatedly inspired readers to new and sometimes critical interpretations. The history of the reception of Camões's work continues to this day, far beyond the borders of Europe. He has an important place in Brazilian and Chinese literature. The event is being organized jointly by the Embassy of Portugal and Freie Universität Berlin.
