Heinrich Böll Centennial

Exhibition in the Foyer of the University Library through January 31, 2018

№ 001/2018 from Jan 10, 2018

On the occasion of the 100th birthday of the writer Heinrich Böll (1917–1985), one of the most widely read authors of 20th century Germany, an exhibition will be on display in the foyer of the University Library until January 31, 2018. The exhibition presents a selection of books from the holdings of the libraries of Freie Universität pertaining to Böll's biography, editions of his work, and hand-drawn sketches. There is a 1974 issue of SPIEGEL magazine, in which Böll's story "The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum" appeared serially as a preprint. The exhibition may be viewed during the opening hours of the library.

Heinrich Böll would have turned 100 on December 21, 2017. His novels, stories, and essays have been widely printed, reprinted, and translated. They were broadcast on the radio and read millions of times and were required reading for generations of school children. They were translated into more than 30 languages and continue to be widely ready in many countries. Numerous films based on his novels are well known, including "The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum" (1975). Böll's critical literary examination of postwar politics in West Germany and his great commitment to freedom and civil rights were recognized in 1972 with the Nobel Prize for Literature, which led to more international attention.

Most of the displayed books may be checked out of the library once the exhibition has ended.
