20 Years of Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University

Kick-off of FUBiS Anniversary Year in 2018 with 77 Students from 16 Countries

№ 018/2018 from Jan 26, 2018

FUBiS, the International Summer and Winter University of Freie Universität Berlin, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. To kick off the anniversary year, FUBiS welcomed 77 students from 16 countries to attend German language classes and other subjects at Freie Universität Berlin. The program was started in 1998 by the Division of International Affairs of Freie Universität Berlin. Since then more than 8,000 students have attended. Most of them are from the United States, the People’s Republic of China, Brazil, and South Korea.

The FUBiS Summer University was held for the first time in 1998 with 35 students attending. Today roughly 650 students attend per year. Currently, three short terms of varying length are offered during the summer and winter to accommodate semester breaks in other countries.

FUBiS is an intensive academic program for international students. It offers German language classes as well as other subjects taught in English. An important goal of the program is to promote intercultural competence. The classes are aimed at undergraduate students and are open to participants from all disciplines. For successfully completed FUBiS classes, Freie Universität Berlin awards credits through the European Credit Transfer System. In addition, the program presents a good opportunity for students from abroad to gain an impression of Germany as a location for attending college. FUBiS has received numerous awards.

The university’s worldwide network of partner universities and cooperation at various levels are important factors contributing to the program’s success. During the anniversary year a new project will be started in cooperation with the University of Tübingen. Beginning in the summer of 2018, FUBiS and the University of Tübingen will jointly run a new program “Europe at the Crossroads: Tübingen-Berlin International Summer School.” Within four weeks, participating students will get to know two well-known university locations in Germany and to gain a deeper understanding of the history of Europe as well as current debates in politics and business. The program will include an excursion to Strassbourg and visits to political and economic institutions in Berlin and Tübingen.
