International Summer and Winter University FUBiS at Freie Universität Berlin Welcomes Students to New Term on Lankwitz Campus

108 Participants from 18 Countries

№ 130/2018 from Jun 03, 2018

The International Summer and Winter University of Freie Universität Berlin started on Sunday with 108 participants from 18 countries. During the six-week term, the students will attend German language classes as well as other subjects. Most of the students are from the United States, China, and Columbia. The current term will run through July 14.

At FUBiS the students can choose between German language classes and various other classes taught in English, or a combination of the two. There are seminars on a variety of topics, including the history of Germany during National Socialism, the European Union, European art history and the history of architecture, and the culture of remembrance in Berlin.

For all the FUBiS courses, Freie Universität Berlin awards credits according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) system. The academic program is augmented with field trips including a boat trip on the Spree River, a street art tour, a guided tour to the scenes of the student movement of 1968, and a tour of the Reichstag. In addition, the participants can also take day-long excursions and weekend trips to Lübeck, Dresden, and Leipzig.

A new project will be carried out for the first time in cooperation with Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen. The program is called “Europe at the Crossroads: Tübingen-Berlin International Summer School.” Within four weeks students will have an opportunity to get to know two renowned university locations in Germany and gain a deeper understanding for the history of Europe as well as current debates in politics and business. The program includes an excursion to Strasbourg and visits to political and economic institutions in both Tübingen and Berlin.

The FUBiS Summer University was held for the first time in 1998, and in 2007 a winter term was added. In 2010 the academic quality of FUBiS was recognized by the Forum on Education Abroad through its Quality Improvement Program (QUIP).
