Literature Meets Criticism

International Conference of Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School of Literary Studies at Freie Universität Berlin from June 27 to 29, 2019

№ 056/2019 from Mar 13, 2019

Literary perspectives on concepts of criticism are the subject of an international conference to be held June 27 to 29 at the Berlin campus of Indiana University (IU Europe Gateway). The conference Poetic Critique will focus on the concept of poetic criticism developed by the early Romantic writer and literary historian Friedrich Schlegel. According to Friedrich Schlegel, criticism should not be viewed primarily as being judgmental, but rather it should contribute to complementing and further developing works of art. The aim of the conference is to discuss current and historical forms of the concept of criticism, with the intention of contributing to a rapprochement of literature and literary studies, art and criticism, and poetry and poetology in the sense of Schlegel. The conference is public, and the conference language is English. Participation is free, and registration is not required. For more information about the conference, see the website http://fsgs.fu-berlin.de/poeticcritique.

The conference is being organized by scholars in the project “The Philological Laboratory. New Models of Dealing with Art beyond Criticism,” which is funded by the Einstein Foundation Berlin. The project was initiated in 2018 and is based at the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School of Literary Studies. The same year, members of the project organized a workshop on “Philology and Criticism” and a poetry event at the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin. The aim of the Philological Laboratory is to develop methods of dealing with art and literature that are not primarily dependent on conventional models of criticism. The Philological Laboratory is headed by Prof. Dr. Michel Chaouli from Indiana University, USA. Michel Chaouli is an Einstein Visiting Fellow at the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School.
