University Collaboration Promotes Sustainable Development

International Spring Campus Conference at Freie Universität Berlin, April 1-5, 2019 / 165 Participants from 20 Countries Expected

№ 074/2019 from Mar 29, 2019

An international conference to be held April 1 to 5, 2019, at Freie Universität Berlin will address university collaboration in various aspects of sustainability. About 165 researchers and university administrative staff members from 20 countries are expected to attend. They will address the issue of what contribution universities can make toward sustaining society. This will be the fourth Spring Campus conference. The topic is “Re: search. Re: act. Re: define. The future is now: driving forward sustainable development.”

The conference will focus on sustainability as a crosscutting theme in research, teaching, and campus management. The conference is based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN member states and will focus on energy, nutrition, and mobility. The organizers chose to focus on these topics because experts say that activities in these areas have a great impact on climate change. In interdisciplinary research and management workshops, the conference participants will discuss and develop recommendations for these three fields of action.

The conference is being organized under the auspices of the University Alliance for Sustainability (UAS), which Freie Universität Berlin founded in cooperation with its strategic partner universities. As for the past three years, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is a sponsor. So far, 425 individuals from all over the world took part in the previous conferences. The UAS also included the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel), the University of British Columbia (Canada), St. Petersburg State University (Russia), and Peking University (China). The members of the network develop ideas, teaching formats, and research projects.

The keynote speakers on the opening day will be Prof. Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, and Matthias Buck, Head of the European Energy Policy at AGORA Energiewende. In addition, four research workshops and a management workshop will take place within the framework of the conference.
