The German-French Colloquium in Berlin is dedicating its lecture program in the 2019/2020 winter semester to the two countries of France and Germany from a global perspective. The first lecture will be given on December 5 by the historian Dr. Silke Mende, Deputy Director of the Centre Marc Bloch, on the history of Francophonie. In her lecture, she will raise the issue of whether the French language has served as a political-cultural “regulatory instrument” – in the nation state, in the French colonial empire, and beyond. On January 16, Dr. Lucas Hardt, a historian at FernUniversität in Hagen, will present his research on Algerian migrants in the German-French border area in the post-war years (1945–1962). In a lecture on February 6, Prof. Dr. Jérôme David, a literary scholar at Université de Genève, will describe the history of “littérature mondiale / world literature” and discuss the reasons for its late reception in French-speaking research. All the lectures of the event series are public. They will be given in German. Admission is free, and registration is not required.
