Freie Universität Berlin students will study the depiction of the Middle Ages in the American television show Game of Thrones in two public courses. The courses, offered through the Friedrich Meinecke Institute, will focus on specific topics like clothing, living conditions, social and political hierarchies, religion and legends, as well as warfare. Participants will also explore the question of how films and television shows like Game of Thrones shape contemporary ideas about the Middle Ages. The course in German takes place Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and runs until February 12. The course is part of the Bachelor’s degree program in history. The English course is on Tuesdays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and runs until February 11. It is part of the Master’s degree program at the Friedrich Meinecke Institute. Students can attend the two courses independently of each other. Both courses are being taught by history professor Dr. Thomas Ertl.
