President of Freie Universität Prof. Dr. Günter M. Ziegler praised Mühlhahn for important contributions as outstanding Sinologist and collegial cooperation in university management

Sinologist and Vice President for Research at Freie Universität Berlin, Prof. Dr. Klaus Mühlhahn, will become the next president of Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen. He succeeds Prof. Dr. Insa Sjurts, who moved to the HSBA Hamburg School of Business Administration in late 2019. Klaus Mühlhahn has been a member of the Executive Board of Freie Universität since 2014, during his first term as Vice President for International Affairs, and since 2018 as Vice President for Research. The president of Freie Universität Berlin, Prof. Dr. Günter M. Ziegler, congratulated Mühlhahn on his new position and thanked him for the work he had done at Freie Universität Berlin, including his very collegial, close cooperation in university management. Ziegler emphasized that Mühlhahn had provided important impulses at Freie Universität as an outstanding scholar of Sinology, a long-standing member of the Executive Board, and in several other offices at the university. Mühlhahn’s responsibilities as vice president will be taken over by other members of the Executive Board until a successor has been found.
Prof. Dr. Klaus Mühlhahn, born in 1963, studied Sinology at Freie Universität Berlin and the National Taiwan Normal University, graduating in 1993 with a master’s degree. He worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Sinology at Freie Universität Berlin until he earned his doctorate in 1998. He then worked as a research assistant at Freie Universität Berlin until 2002. From 2002 to 2004 he was a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Chinese Studies at the University of California in Berkeley. In 2004 he accepted an appointment at the University of Turku in Finland, where he worked as a professor of contemporary Chinese and Asian history at the Institute of History. In 2007 he accepted an appointment at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana (USA), where he taught as a professor of Chinese history. In 2010 he accepted an appointment as professor of Chinese history and culture at Freie Universität Berlin. He is currently the deputy director of the Graduate School of East Asian Studies, which opened in 2013. It was set up in 2012 with funding from the German government’s Excellence Initiative for universities.
