Historian Ricardo Pérez Montfort Wins Georg Forster Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

Mexican Researcher to Be Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Latin American Studies at Freie Universität Berlin

The Mexican scholar Ricardo Pérez Montfort has received a Georg Forster Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The historian will conduct research as a visiting scholar at the Latin America Institute of Freie Universität Berlin. His research will deal with the Presidency of Lázaro Cárdenas (1895-1970) and Mexican populism in the 1930s and 1940s. Lázaro Cárdenas was the President of Mexico from 1934 to 1940. The research award is endowed with 60,000 euros and is financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Ricardo Pérez Montfort is a professor of history at the Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social in Mexico and a member of the International Research Training Group “Temporalities of Future” at Freie Universität. His main areas of research are the cultural and ethnic history of Mexico, German-Mexican relations, and the political history of Latin America in the 20th century. Montfort is also a media critic on the social situation of the indigenous population. He has presented several award-winning film documentaries on the topic. His intensive intellectual production also includes poetry and prose works.

The Georg Forster Research Award honors internationally recognized scholars and scientists from emerging and developing countries who work on development-related topics. The award winners are nominated by colleagues from Germany and invited to establish or expand collaborations with them. The award is named after the naturalist, travel writer, and journalist Georg Forster (1754–1794), a friend of Alexander von Humboldt.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation enables more than 2,000 researchers from all over the world to spend time conducting research in Germany. The foundation maintains an interdisciplinary network of more than 30,000 Humboldtians in around 140 countries worldwide.
