Action Month for Elimination of Violence against Women
November 1 – 30: Blog Posts, Exhibition, Award Ceremony
№ 213/2021 from Oct 29, 2021
At Freie Universität the month of November this year is an action month for the elimination of gender-based violence. This month was chosen to include November 25, the day the United Nations has designated as an International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. A new blog GESCHLECHTER*GERECHT hosted by the Chief Gender Equality Office team presents information about violence against women with a focus on sexualized harassment, discrimination, and violence at universities. Blog entries will address various forms of gender-based violence and portray contact offices, counseling centers, projects, and individuals working in this area.
There is also a virtual exhibition #MeToo und die Universität featuring contributions by students who attended a seminar dealing with sexual harassment and violence at universities.
On November 16, 2021, the Margherita von Brentano Prize from Freie Universität will be awarded to a database project, Feminizidmap, that has been documenting gender-related killings of women and girls in Germany since 2019. Registration is required to attend the digital award ceremony.
There will be workshops for students and staff members at Freie Universität identifying as members of the FLINT (female, lesbian, intersex, nonbinary, trans) community. For example, there will be a workshop on self-assertion and self-defense and one on empowerment.
Further Information
In 1999 the United Nations passed a resolution declaring November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This date was selected to honor the three Mirabal sisters, political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally raped and murdered in 1960 by order of the country’s military intelligence service. Women’s rights activists from Latin America and the Caribbean drew attention to this particular tragedy in order to establish a day against gender-based violence in 1981. Ever since, women’s rights and human rights organizations have continued to observe the day, each year calling for an end to the pervasive issue of violence against women.
