Freie Universität Berlin Expresses Solidarity with the People of Iran

University to participate in the global “Campus Rally for Iran” / Live event on Twitter at 11:30 a.m. on November 30, 2022

№ 223/2022 from Nov 29, 2022

Freie Universität Berlin has expressed solidarity with the people of Iran and denounced the violence that has been inflicted on Iranians by state forces. “The dignity of every human being, freedom of expression, and academic freedom are inseparable. They belong together, and because of this deep connection, which also forms the bedrock of Freie Universität Berlin, we condemn any acts of repression and violence against science, against women, and against free speech, as well as acts against the free development of an individual’s personality,” says president of Freie Universität Berlin, Professor Günter M. Ziegler. The university will be participating in an international show of solidarity called the “Campus Rally for Iran” organized by the organization “Iranian Scholars for Liberty” on November 30, 2022, with a live event on Twitter Spaces at 11:30 a.m.

The live event, which is being held in English and in conjunction with Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, will focus on the current situation in Iran as well as its implications for Iranian students, researchers, and academic freedom. It will begin at 11:30 a.m. with an interview between political scientist Dr. Mariam Salehi, head of the “Transnational Conflicts” research group at Freie Universität Berlin’s Center for Interdisciplinary Peace and Conflict Research (INTERACT), and Neda Soltani, specialist officer for at-risk scholars at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin’s International Department. The event will take place via Twitter Spaces, where users on Twitter can have live audio conversations with each other. Anyone can join the Space as a listener, but you will need a user account to interact with others in the discussion. The Twitter Space can be accessed through Freie Universität’s account @FU_Berlin and Humboldt-Universität’s account @HumboldtUni.

The discussion between Mariam Salehi and Neda Soltani will be followed by contributions from Dr. Florian Kohstall, head of the “Global Responsibility” program at Freie Universität Berlin’s Center for International Cooperation, and Dr. Khashayar Razghandi, material scientist and engineer at Humboldt-Universität.
