“Cooperative Learning and Using Complex Instruction in Heterogeneous Classrooms”

Conference for teachers and school management staff to be held at Freie Universität Berlin from June 14‒16, 2024

№ 118/2024 from Jun 04, 2024

Freie Universität Berlin will be hosting a summer academy for teachers called “Kooperative Lernformen und der Ansatz des Komplexen Unterrichts in heterogenen Lerngruppen” (Cooperative Learning and Using Complex Instruction in Heterogeneous Classrooms). The event will take place from June 14‒16, 2024. The aim of the academy is to provide teachers and school management staff with practice- and evidence-based strategies required to integrate cooperative learning within their classrooms to, in turn, promote inclusivity. The Complex Instruction approach provides students with the tools to practice democratic values from an early age, to train perspective-taking, and to foster social skills. If you are a teacher or member of school management and interested in attending the event, please apply by June 8, 2024, by sending an email to: elisabeth.zick@fu-berlin.de.

The three-day academy is a joint event organized by Freie Universität Berlin, the University of Potsdam, and Stanford University. It will be offered in German and English and led by Professor Daniela Niesta Kayser. Professor Niesta Kayser is a psychologist who has been providing (student) teachers with further education and professionalization courses since 2018. She is currently a guest professor at Freie Universität Berlin. The academy will also feature contributions from Winnie-Karen Giera (University of Potsdam); Christine Schmalenbach (Universität Hamburg); and Rachel Lotan, David Heinke, and Geetha Lakshminarayanan (Stanford University). The conference is organized and hosted by the Special Education Division (with a focus on emotional and social development) at Freie Universität Berlin’s Department of Education and Psychology and supported by the Division of International Affairs.
