Visit at ASML
16 physics students and alumni accepted the invitation to an exclusive visit to the Berlin site of ASML - a company in the semiconductor industry headquartered in Veldhoven, Netherlands.
In the Experience Center with its variety of exhibits, they took a look at the products that are manufactured by ASML worldwide and in Berlin. Our host Dr. Nils Schuth works as a process engineer on the deep ultra wafer plates, thin slices of semiconductor material. The highest precision is achieved here, elements are positioned with an accuracy of a quarter of a nanometer, similar to the scale of DNA.
Topics of the inspiring visit were insights into the semiconductor industry, the structure of microchips and the role of ASML. Also, the careers of Dr. Schuth and his colleagues, who accompanied the visit, as well as the perspective of a current working student, who reported on his experiences at the company, provided interesting insights into possible career paths. The students asked many questions - about the subject matter, the technical details, the company and the work experience of the individuals - the discussion was so interesting and stimulating that the students even stayed an hour longer than planned.
The alumni team would like to thank alumnus Dr. Nils Schuth for his initiative and the invitation. Dr. Schuth completed his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in physics as well as his doctorate at the Freie Universität Berlin. This was followed by a four-year postdoctoral stay in Mexico. Since July 2023 he has been working at ASML as a process engineer. Nils Schuth is also involved as a mentor for a student and scholarship holder of the Deutschlandstipendium. His mentee was also present during this visit and was delighted to gain this exclusive insight.
