The Brazilian author and journalist Bernardo Carvalho will serve as the 42nd Samuel Fischer Visiting Professor at the Peter Szondi Institute of Comparative Literature, Freie Universität Berlin, during winter semester 2019/2020. Bernardo Carvalho will hold the inaugural lecture on November 6. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. and will be in English. Attendance is free and open to the public.

As part of the professorship, Bernardo Carvalho will teach a seminar entitled, “Desire against Identity.” He will explore with students how literature challenges current concepts of identity. Seminar participants will study works by authors from diverse cultural backgrounds within the context of political developments in Brazil. The course starts on October 16 and takes place Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. It will be taught in English and is open to students from other institutes as well. Students interested in taking the course can register online in advance through the Freie Universität’s Campus Management portal or register in class on the first day (October 16).

Bernardo Carvalho is the author of an award-winning short story collection and has written several plays as well as eleven novels, four of which have been translated into German. In addition to producing literary works, Bernardo Carvalho has worked as an editor and foreign correspondent for the daily newspaper Folha de São Paulo. He has also translated Oliver Sacks and Bruce Chatwin into Portuguese. Carvalho’s works follow the traces of global history through modern day Brazil. The writer lives in São Paulo, Brazil.
