The Graduate School of the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at Freie Universität is dedicated to a comprehensive interdisciplinary analysis of North American societies from the early modern era to the present. Between 2019 and 2024, the GSNAS’s Research Focus will be on changing notions of “democracy” in North America.

GSNAS invites applications for Doctoral Grants (3-year funding period) and Doctoral Memberships (Promotionsplätze) for the Academic Year 2019/20. Doctoral candidates have to pursue a doctoral project in the field of North American Studies (i.e. the dissertation has to relate to the U.S. and/or Canada) in one of the six disciplines represented at the John F. Kennedy Institute (culture, economics, history, literature, political science, sociology).

Interviews with shortlisted doctoral candidates will be held after the internal review process, for the upcoming interview dates please see "Selection Procedure". Admission to the program starts in October 2019 (German fall term).
