QS Subject Ranking: Excellent Results for Freie Universität

In QS Subject Ranking 13 subjects at Freie Universität placed among top 50 worldwide and six subjects first in Germany

In the latest QS World University Ranking by Subject, Freie Universität Berlin achieved outstanding performance in numerous subjects. As the global higher education company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Ltd. announced in London, the university ranks among the top 50 universities in the world in 13 subjects. Within Germany Freie Universität heads the list in six subjects and placed second six times. These results are based in particular on the university’s reputation among researchers and employers; the number of citations by researchers also played a major role. More than 1,200 institutions in 53 countries were evaluated and ranked.

In the subject group Arts & Humanities, Freie Universität placed second in Germany, following Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin at first place nationwide; worldwide Freie Universität placed at rank 24 in the arts and humanities. In the separate subjects of this group, Freie Universität was first in Germany in English language and literature (37 worldwide) and modern languages (26 worldwide). The university placed second in Germany in archaeology (19 worldwide) and history (35 worldwide). In ancient studies, the university also placed well, at rank 7 in Germany and 41 worldwide.

In the subject group Social Sciences & Management as a whole, Freie Universität came in third place nationwide behind the University of Mannheim and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and worldwide at rank 78. In individual subjects in this group, Freie Universität was ranked first in Germany in political science (rank 31 worldwide), sociology (20 worldwide), and social policy and administration (worldwide: 31). Within Germany Freie Universität was ranked second in anthropology (rank 33 worldwide) and communication and media studies (worldwide: 50).

In the subject group Natural Sciences, Freie Universität reached rank 10 in Germany and rank 115 worldwide. The individual subject geography ranked second in Germany and worldwide 38. Within the group of Life Sciences & Medicine, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin is Germany’s highest ranked medical school and 33rd worldwide. It is the jointly operated medical school of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Veterinary science at Freie Universität was ranked second in Germany and 35th worldwide.
