The Logo and Green Elements
The university logo consists of a graphic design with the words “Freie Universität Berlin” divided across three lines. The text is written using the font “Source Sans.” The logo can only be used in black or white – and may be placed on images or against colored backgrounds. When combined with the green, randomly-generated background, Freie Universität’s logo may only be used against a white background.
The precise configuration of the green background varies every time because it is produced by an algorithm using a grid system. Each iteration of the logo produced in this way is considered valid. The logo as displayed on the Freie Universität website with a green background is dynamic and constantly changing. However, the extent to which this dynamism can be expressed depends on the medium.
It is, however, possible to use the green background elements as a basis for other media that aim to reflect the corporate design. The colors of the green background may not be altered when doing so – click the following link for a summary of the Don’ts for Using the Logo.
The Freie Universität Icon
The icon is used when there is not enough space for the full Freie Universität logo, for example, as a profile picture on the university’s official social media channels and in other web applications. Use of the Freie Universität icon is exclusively reserved for Freie Universität Berlin’s official, main channels.
The Freie Universität icon is also used in other web applications with limited space. “Freie Universität Berlin” may be placed next to the icon as a single line of text without any other additions. Alternatively, a different text (e.g., “Service Portal”) may also appear next to the Freie Universität icon, also only as a single line of text.
A special version of the Freie Universität icon as a watermark is used exclusively in videos. See the Guidelines for more information.
The Primary Colors
Freie Universität Berlin’s primary corporate identity colors are black and green. While green is a key aspect of Freie Universität’s visual identity, it should be used sparingly. Please make sure that there is sufficient contrast between the foreground and background colors. This will help ensure digital accessibility, another important factor of the new corporate design.
In addition to being a primary color, black and its various shades are used as secondary colors. Additional secondary colors include white and blue (and the different shades thereof). These are used to accentuate the primary colors – particularly green – and create depth.
The Seal
The Seal
The official seal remains an important part of the university’s identity. It is displayed at the bottom of every webpage on our domain and acts as an important reminder of Freie Universität Berlin’s core values. It will continue to be used on degree certificates, transcripts, and selected merchandise items. However, it may not be used on posters, flyers, etc., in place of the Freie Universität logo.
PowerPoint Presentation Template
PowerPoint presentations are a popular form of communication at Freie Universität Berlin. We have created a template to ensure that these presentations can be used consistently across the university. This template is available to all Freie Universität employees.
The slides are laid out according to a grid that helps to align each design element. The official Freie Universität PowerPoint presentations will always use “Arial” as the main font. This is a universal font that is particularly well-suited for print material should you wish to make hard copies of your presentation.
The PowerPoint presentation is available in the download area as a complete file (containing all four design variants) or as four individual variants (base, color, photo, and green background).
Print Products
Print products play a central role in the external image of the university and have a great impact on its visual identity. The logo with the green background is the default format for print products and is placed at the top left with sufficient distance from other elements. The logo may be placed on photos and colored backgrounds if necessary. Either the black logo (without the green background) or the white logo is to be used depending on the characteristics of the background and the contrast conditions.
Print products are based on a grid system that enables a uniform page layout and simplifies the arrangement of text and graphic elements.
