Commitment to quality doctoral education in DRS member programs

  • DRS member programs are committed to common quality standards and regulations of the DRS. In accordance with these, they establish program regulations following the DRS model regulation for doctoral education, as passed by the department council.
  • Dahlem Research School meets with its member programs every three years in order to identify any need for support and to develop solutions to problems.
  • All programs are accompanied by boards or committees, which include the representatives of the doctoral candidates. An ombudsperson is appointed as mediator in case of conflict situations.
  • The funding for doctoral researchers together with the program coordination provide the foundation for the programs. In addition, further funding for qualification measures of the doctoral researchers is provided by the programs.
  • Calls for applications for the programs have to be announced openly on an international level, the following selection process has to be multi-leveled and transparent.
  • Supervision of doctoral researchers follows the guidelines for good supervision of doctoral studies. Supervision agreements are mandatory for all doctoral candidates. The supervisors and the doctoral researchers meet at least once per semester to discuss the progress of research.
  • The curriculum is an accompanying part of the doctoral education regulations, it includes mandatory courses on good scientific practice. The workload of course work is limited to 30 CP.
  • Programs actively seek international doctoral researchers (incoming). Outgoing doctoral researchers are provided with funding for conference participation and international research stays.
  • With support from the DRS, the programs develop concepts and measures to support and further gender equality as well as a work and family life balance.
  • In cooperation with the DRS, the programs take responsibility for the additional qualification of doctoral researchers concerning their academic and non-academic careers.
  • The completion of studies in a doctoral program is confirmed by an additional certificate and a transcript of records.
