In addition to the individual doctorate, the "structured doctorate", e.g. in a graduate school or a research training group of the German Research Foundation, has become firmly established in recent years.

Doctoral programs at Freie Universität as well as cooperating programs from the Berlin-Brandenburg science region can become members of Dahlem Research School. Admission (accreditation) is decided by the DRS Permanent Commission on the basis of quality criteria, in particular the quality of supervision.

DRS supports its member programs in the areas of quality assurance and qualification. Together with the Research Department, it advises and supports applications for the establishment and extension of graduate funding.
