Maja Grubisic, DRS HONORS Fellow, publishes in Environmental Pollution on the effects of artificial lighting

News from May 17, 2018

Maja Grubisic, DRS HONORS Fellow (2017-18), publishes in leading journal Environmental Pollution. Her study is concerned with white LED lights which are increasingly used for street illumination. The use of these lights is raising ecological concerns due to the high amount of blue light they emit, which is an important regulator of biological rhythms in nature. This can disturb functioning of urban waters, as the new study finds that a switch from traditional to LED lighting increases impacts of nocturnal illumination on the basis of aquatic ecosystems. Lighting near waters should be carefully designed to avoid unnecessary illumination of water and its inhabitants.
