In her project in the department of chemistry, Laura Elomaa develops in vitro models of human small intestine. These models are needed to replace in vivo animal models in studies of pathogen-host interactions. To obtain these models, she synthesizes new biocompatible 3D printing materials and 3D prints intestine-mimicking scaffolds, where she cultures cells to form multilayer intestinal tissue.
