Moscow State Institute for International Relations (University)

Freie Universität has temporarily suspended all academic relations with Russian research institutes and universities.

A long-time partner of Freie Universität Berlin is the Moscow State Institute for International Relations (MGIMO University). A part of Lomonosov Moscow State University until 1944, it became a separate institute and was reorganized into a university in 1994. Many Russian diplomats are educated there and many of today's top-ranking politicians are former students of MGIMO.

One outstanding characteristic of MGIMO is its excellent language education. More than 50 foreign languages are taught regularly. As one result of this, programs offered jointly by MGIMO and Freie Universität Berlin are of increasing interest.

Supplementary Study “German-Russian Relations: Economy and Politics”

“German-Russian Relations: Economy and Politics (RDWP)” is a one-year supplementary study program for bachelor degree students conducted in German. The degree programme shows Germany and its role in an international context. RDWP focuses on economics, but the program is open to students of all MGIMO faculties as an interdisciplinary bachelor's degree. The program is the successor of the program "German Studies Russia".

The RDWP study program includes courses in economics and politics as well as a mandatory internship. Participation in the RDWP is certified with a certificate of 30 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).

Further information is available in German on the website of the program.

Double Degree Master of Arts “International Relations”

The M.A. program is a joint program offered by Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt University, and University of Potsdam. It is open to graduates in political sciences or similar disciplines who have focused on international relations. Excellent knowledge of German and English is a prerequisite.

“International Relations” is a consecutive, bilingual program lasting four semesters. International relations are part of political science, which is therefore a basis of this program aiming to prepare students for the complex challenges of the 21st century in world politics, both theoretically and practically. It prepares them for a career in the broad range of administration, political consulting, business, and science on a national as well international level. The program provides in-depth scientific and professional knowledge of theory, empiricism, and methods of international relations as well as academic skills.

Successful graduates receive a German and a Russian master’s degree.
