In the area of the Yucatan Peninsula where the lowland Maya culture developed, Yucatec Maya is still spoken today in the Mexican states of Yucatan, Quintana Roo and part of Campeche, as well as in northern Belize.
The first large-scale survey of Yucatec Maya variation was carried out between 2004 and 2007 by a group of researchers who have been studying Yucatec Maya linguistic variation for 20 years. The sample covers all regions in which the language is currently spoken.
At this symposium, the speakers will discuss the database with the linguistic varieties in relation to the density of the Maya-speaking population, the regional differences between urban and rural areas, the effects of bilingualism and how they have changed over time.
